History Trans
The term "trans man" is a shortening of "transgender man." The word "transgender" combines the Latin prefix "trans," meaning "across" or "beyond," with "gender," referring to the social and cultural roles associated with sex. The usage of "transgender" gained prominence in the late 20th century to describe individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.
Before the widespread use of "trans man," people might have used phrases like "female-to-male" (FTM) or "FTM transgender" to refer to individuals assigned female at birth who identify as male. These terms were descriptive but have been largely supplanted by the more inclusive and widely recognized "trans man" in contemporary discussions on gender identity.
